This photographer was probably taken from Atlantis II, a research vesse of the Woods Hole Oceanograpic Institution. The islands are probably in the Gulf of C alifornia. In correspondence, Robert D. Ballard of Woods Hole says Alvin will dive in Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California to investigate how animal larvae move f rom one vent to another. In another memo, NGM Illustrations Editor William L. Allen says between June and July 1985 Alvin dove off Mexico to a black smoker. Kristof used an off-load camera to try for a photo of Alvin at depth with the smoker... The mother ship of the Alvin is the Atlantis II. In another memo dated Septe mber 17, 1984, NGS photographer Emory Kristof says Alvin is making a series of dives in Quaymas Basin (sic) off the coast of Mexico in June 1985. Bob Ballard is the ch ief scientist. Quaymas (sic) has black smokers, most of the vent animals found in the Galapagos Rift, and large red crabs that we have never seen there. The Illustrations Library never received captions for this photograph, but judging from the above-mentioned correspondence, these islands are most likely in the G ulf of California.
